Anxiety Treatments

Anxiety disorders affect approximately 17% of people across the life span, and are a common condition. The anxiety clinic of Sydney Clinical Psychologist Centre uses scientifically validated cognitive behavioural therapies to effectively treat anxiety disorders including social phobia or social anxiety, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Anxiety Disorders

These anxiety disorders represent an unhelpful over-activation of the normal fear response in the body resulting in a range of bodily symptoms including tension, headaches, upset stomach, shaking, and shortness of breath. Sometimes this causes over-breathing which results in further symptoms such as dizziness, light headedness, numbness and tingling, and racing thoughts. Because these feelings are dramatic, people often interpret these symptoms as a medical crisis such as having a stroke, heart attack or going crazy, and these fears then play a maintaining role in anxiety. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for anxiety disorders, as practiced at our anxiety clinic, aims to address the thoughts such as these fears of medical crisis, and behaviours such as avoidance of people, places, and activities that are associated with the fears, to resolve the anxiety.

Sydney Clinical Psychologist Centre Anxiety Treatments

The clinical psychologists at Sydney Clinical Psychologist Centre anxiety clinic are certified practitioners of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and receive ongoing supervision in the use of traditional CBT and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for anxiety disorders. When you attend the anxiety disorders clinic during the first session a thorough history of your life will be taken, usually some questionnaires will need to be completed, and the type of anxiety disorder that you suffer will be determined. Co-occurring conditions including alcohol and drug use that are sometimes used by people to manage anxiety, will also be determined and a treatment program developed to address these issues.

Anxiety Therapy Treatment

The cognitive behavioural therapy treatment programs for anxiety disorders usually involve three phases of treatment:

First phase:

It involves detailed education about how anxiety disorders develop and are maintained including the systems of the brain and body that are involved in each of the symptoms, the thoughts about anxiety and trigger situations that maintain anxiety.

Second phase:

At this stage, tasks are set to normalise the experience of these symptoms and desensitise to the triggers for anxiety. Often this involves prolonged exposure to the feared situations and prevention of safety and avoidance behaviours.

Third phase:

At this time, the therapy involves behavioural pattern breaking and expanding the horizon of experiences that have been limited by anxiety and avoidance. For each of the anxiety disorders the patterns of avoidance and rigid behaviour are different, and a tailored program for each person is developed by the psychologist at our anxiety clinic.
